These are typical finished sizes; brands and pattern designers vary. For bed blankets, the chart assumes the blanket covers the top of the mattress with some drop on the sides — measure your bed and add the drop you like.

How to choose a bed blanket size

  1. Measure the mattress width and length.
  2. Measure the mattress depth — deep and pillow-top mattresses need more drop.
  3. Decide on the drop: about 8–12 in (20–30 cm) on each side for a blanket on top of a duvet or sheet; more to tuck in.
  4. Add twice the drop to the width, and one drop (plus any tuck at the foot) to the length.
  5. Compare with the standard sizes and round up.

Example: a queen mattress is 60 × 80 in. With a 12-inch drop on each side and at the foot, the blanket needs to be about 84 × 92 in — the standard 90 × 90 or 90 × 100 queen blanket covers it.

Baby blanket safety

Blankets are lovely gifts, but health organisations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics advise that babies should sleep on their backs on a firm, flat surface with no loose blankets, pillows or soft toys in the crib for at least the first year, to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Use baby blankets for supervised floor time, tummy time, the stroller and cuddles; for sleep, a wearable blanket or sleep sack is the usual recommendation. Check the current advice in your country.

Planning a knitted or crocheted blanket

The blanket planner workbook takes your target size and the gauge from your swatch — stitches and rows per 4 inches or 10 cm — and calculates how many stitches to cast on or chain, how many rows to work and roughly how much yarn to buy based on the yardage your swatch used. Always wash and dry your swatch the way you will treat the blanket, because many yarns relax or shrink.

Worked example: a crocheted throw

StepValue
Target size50 × 60 in
Gauge from swatch14 stitches and 16 rows per 4 in
Stitches per row50 × 14 ÷ 4 = 175
Rows60 × 16 ÷ 4 = 240
Swatch used22 yd of yarn for a 4 × 4 in square
Estimated yarn(50 × 60) ÷ 16 × 22 ≈ 4,125 yd — about 18 balls of 230 yd, plus 10% extra

Quilt sizes

Quilts are often a little larger than blankets because they hang over the sides of the bed. The quilt worksheet helps you choose block size and layout: for example, a throw of 50 × 60 in fits 5 × 6 blocks of 10 in; a queen quilt of about 90 × 100 in might use 9 × 10 blocks. Add borders to reach the exact size.
